daft punk is playing at kimono my house

today was a day i woke up excited for. i was off, and a theater nearby was doing a special showing of Daft Punk’s INTERSTELLA 5555!

the showing wasn’t until 7;30PM, so i decided to head out around 3 and run some errands and window shop. ending up heading over to

Kimono My House!

Kimono My House is a Japanese import shop that mainly houses anime and tokusatsu trinkets and collectibles. kinda similar to the shop I run.

It’s been around since the 80’s. many attribute it to being the first of it’s kind in the US. Being one of the first places to sell Godzilla and other tokusatsu goodies. i’ve been a couple of times since moving to The Bay, especially since i live so close. The store’s owner, Susan is such a sweet woman. She’s like everyone’s collective grandmother.

despite the AI, the crowd was nevertheless, head-bumpin’, foot tapping, and singing along to one of the best French House albums ever made.

this was my first time seeing INTERSTELLA 5555 i had only seen some of it as indivual music videos before. seeing songs like Something About Us and Veridis Quo as a fully realized anime is really sick! that whole theater was grooving along to Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, (of course) and the vibes could’nt be bettwe

overall, i really liked it! it’s not perfect, but as a visualier for Discovery, i think it works great!

Kimono is located amongst a bunch of warehouses. the store itself is just a warehouse that has been sectioned off for shopping. honestly don’t remember if i copped anything…but i did end up easily killing a couple of hours in here. just looking around, getting lost in the sauce. when talking to Susan, i was surprised to discover she isn’t much of a collector herself, she just stocks what her customers recommend. no hate, just really surprising because of how curated the store feels.

if you happen to be in the area and like Japanese BS, it’s a must-visit.

around 6pm, I hopped on the BART, got off, and then took a bus to the shopping center where AMC was located. I spent a lil time at a nearby Barnes & Noble, a store i used to love when i was younger. Barnes was one of few retailers in 2015-ish to stock anime import figures, today that is less of a feat with the recent commercialization of the hobby. i used to spend hours after school loitering and reading manga in there. now, it’s just not doing it for me sadly.

about 1o minutes before the showtime, I headed upstairs to pretty packed theater. after waiting through OVER 30 MINUTES of previews, it was finally time! had a huge smile on my face awaiting greatness, but unforcedly, there was a huge catch. as this is a 4K restoration, they decided to put a nasty AI upscaler over the entire picture. while thankfully still in 4;3, the image has been smoothed to hell and back. i noticed a bit whispering from the audience, likely ppl bitching about it aswell. Thankfully only the intro was murdered by the filter, after that it wasn’t too bad.

thx if u read all this. this is my first blog post so ik it’s rough. -mossheadd

(excuse the shitty photos, not tryna be that guy at the movies)

still don’t really regret going. if i paid attention to the comments on the accouncement post i could have guessed this shit was AI. have been on a 90’s anime kick lately, and this filled that craving perfectly.
